Causes of power loss
Although power loss occurs during a storm event, there are other causes of power loss such as appliance failure, switch gear failure and wiring failure. There are a couple of easy tests you can perform before you call an electrician. The most common one of these is appliance failure

We are happy to talk through some basic fault finding however before you call you could try these.

  1. Sometimes an RCD or MCB will not reset due to a faulty appliance being plugged in.
  2. To fault find this start by unplugging all appliances, both indoor and outdoor, from the power points. Please ensure that you unplug them not just switch them off at the wall.
  3. Once appliances are unplugged, including Rheem hotwater units, you should be able to reset the RCD or MCB. If it resets and doesn’t trip again then plug in your appliances one at a time until you find the faulty one, it will cause the RCD to trip again.

Please note: Dont try to keep resetting if continual trip occurs, call us.

Remember, safety around switchboards is vital – call us if in doubt

Switch gear and wiring failure

Although not as common these can cause loss of power and will dfeinitely require the assistance of our licensed electricians. Do not touch in case of electric shock. Wiring failures will always cause a circuit breaker or RCD to trip, that is their purpose before a fire can occur. Continually trying to reset a safety device is dangerous.
